Second medical opinion

2.4_Segona_opinio_medica

Citizens have the right to get a second medical opinion on their disease, as set forth in Decree 125/2007 of the Catalan Parliament.

A second medical opinion is a clinical evaluation carried out based on medical information from a specialist, which includes a diagnostic analysis and treatment proposal. Further information is available on the link below.

The Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO) is one of the referral centres for second medical opinions on cases of cancer.

Anyone insured by the Catalan health system (Catalan Health Service, CatSalut) that visits a hospital in the Catalan public network and suffers from cancer can ask for a second medical opinion from our centre.

The patient must have a confirmed cancer diagnosis and a treatment proposal from his specialist or oncology team.

To request a second medical opinion at our centre, the patient should go to the Citizens’ Assistance Unit of the hospital being visited, where they will inform him or her of the necessary administrative procedure to follow and help to process the request.

The Citizens’ Assistance Unit of the hospital that the patient is visiting will take care of gathering the necessary information (medical healthcare report, other pertinent documentation) and sending it according to established administrative procedure.

The medical evaluation is carried out without programming an in-person consultation or complementary examinations. A report on the second medical opinion will be sent to the patient and the referral hospital. Should there be a lack of sufficient information, the report will so indicate.

An in-person consultation will be carried out according to the criteria of the specialist that must carry out the evaluation.

Should the second medical opinion coincide with the initial diagnosis and/or treatment, the patient will continue to receive medical treatment at the centre normally visited.

However, should the second medical opinion offer a different diagnosis and/or treatment and this patient choose that option, medical treatment can be given at the patient’s usual centre, if the patient so chooses, or at the ICO.
